Everything you need to know about joining WHAM.

Thinking of joining WHAM? Here are answers to some common questions about our club.

What is WHAM Badminton Club?

WHAM stands for Whitchurch Hit And Miss. We are a friendly, social, non-league badminton club in Cardiff, offering enjoyable games and a great standard of play.

When do you play?

We play on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

Where do you play?

We use all three badminton courts at Better Eastern Leisure Centre, Llanrumney Avenue, Llanrumney, Cardiff CF3 4DN. Visit our Where We Play page for photographs, a map and directions.

Who can join?

WHAM is an adult club for players aged 18 and over. Membership is subject to available space, playing suitability and committee approval.

What standard of player is the club suitable for?

Our club welcomes intermediate, advanced and competitive players who enjoy friendly, social badminton. If you are returning to the sport or unsure whether your standard is suitable, contact us and tell us about your experience.

Can I visit before becoming a member?

Yes. Non-members and visitors can enjoy their first visit free of charge. Subsequent visits cost £7.00 per night, payable on arrival. Visits are subject to space and playing suitability, so please contact us beforehand to arrange your visit.

Can I just turn up on a Thursday?

Please arrange your first visit with us in advance. This lets us confirm availability and discuss any questions before you come along.

How do I apply for membership?

Complete our online enquiry form, selecting “Joining WHAM” or “Membership enquiry”. Tell us a little about your badminton experience and we will get back to you.

How are membership fees paid?

Membership subscriptions are paid quarterly. There is no joining fee, and new members pay a proportionate subscription for the remainder of the current quarter. Contact us for the current subscription amount.

Do you play singles or doubles?

We mainly play doubles, mixing with different players and sharing court time fairly. Singles may be played when attendance is low and courts are available, provided nobody is unfairly left waiting.

What shuttles do you use?

We normally use Yonex Mavis 2000 plastic shuttles, with feather shuttles used occasionally.

What should I wear?

Wear suitable indoor court footwear and clothing you can move comfortably in. Bags and drinks should be kept clear of the courts and emergency exits.

Is WHAM a league club?

No. WHAM is a social, non-league club. We enjoy a good standard of badminton and friendly competition without league commitments.

Does the club organise social activities?

Yes. Many members visit The Ty’r Winch pub after Thursday sessions for refreshments and a chat. Club activities also include meals, Christmas dinners, ice skating, guided walks, and cinema or theatre visits. See our Social page.
